Six Years of Allied Media Conference Branding and Communications
WITH ALLIED MEDIA PROJECTS
Branding / Digital + Print Design / Facilitation / Process Management / Strategy
The Allied Media Conference (AMC) is an annual conference held in Detroit and produced by Allied Media Projects. It explores the intersections of media and communications, art, technology, education, and social justice. The Work Department was honored to develop a new visual identity in 2012 and to provide design and planning support for the following six years. We rooted our work together in a shared goal to cultivate an accessible, accommodating, and inclusive experience online, in print, and in person where people can connect, organize, and feel welcome.
Our approach to the design and development for each year’s visual identity and tools was deeply inspired by themes of connection, transformation, and participation. Through year-long, participatory planning processes, we engaged with conference attendees and staff across the country to understand their visions for the conference design and messaging. Drawing from their input, we created custom visuals each year for print and digital tools used throughout the conference, including a program book, signage for wayfinding, social media posts, website graphics, and all other conference materials.
Through this work, we facilitated a collaborative design process that built on the conference’s rich visual history and created a platform for a library of unique visual language and participatory design processes.
With each annual conference, Allied Media Projects has grown and evolved. What began as an organization built to produce the conference has matured into a stand alone entity with a larger mission and broader programming that needed its own brand and identity. The Work Department utilized similar collaborative processes to also design and maintain the organization’s visual identity and website.
