Visualizing Mission through Participatory Branding

WITH PEOPLE IN EDUCATION

Visual identity development for a media arts organization

In 2017, Detroit Future Schools became People in Education, a name that more fully reflected their evolution into a digital media arts program committed to humanizing schooling. To support this transition, PIE partnered with The Work Department to create a new visual identity rooted in their mission and values.

We began with a participatory design workshop that invited PIE’s team to reflect on the essence of their work and explore how it could be expressed visually. Together, we centered on three key values: connection, curiosity, and reflection. We looked for ways to bring those ideas to life through design. Our goal was to build a brand system that was expressive, adaptable, and grounded in how PIE works.

In the end, we created a wordmark that feels both grounded and open. Its soft, permeable border reflects learning as a fluid and relational process. Inspired by PIE’s commitment to human-centered education, we created every element in the brand toolkit by hand, from scanned yarn to watercolor textures. The tactile quality of the visuals conveys warmth, care, and individuality.

Because PIE would be creating their own materials, including a new website and printed pieces, it was important that the brand system be easy to use. We developed three logo sizes and a series of simple, colorful shapes that could be rearranged to support everything from social media graphics to business cards. We designed the brand elements to be intuitive and flexible, giving the team the tools they needed to confidently communicate their work.

This collaborative process resulted in a visual identity that reflects PIE’s mission and offers a compelling, cohesive way to share their story with others.
