Celebrating Title IX’s 50th Anniversary

WITH PROJECT PLAY SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

Campaign development, event production, and storytelling to honor women and girls in sports.

Passed in 1972, Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other educational program that receives funding from the federal government. In addition to playing a critical role in expanding sports opportunities for young women at the collegiate level, Title IX has been a catalyst for building awareness of, and appreciation for, the positive impact of sports, play and recreation in the social emotional development of young girls. Project Play: Southeast Michigan, a partnership of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, and the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program, partnered with The Work Department to commemorate Title IX’s 50th anniversary and lift up the importance of continued access for girls and women in sports. Together, we developed campaign messaging, a video, and a celebration event.

We began by analyzing local and national data on girls and women in sports to uncover key insights and opportunities for the future. Research shows that girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence, self-esteem, and long-term health benefits, but girls in Michigan participate in athletics at a lower rate than boys, mirroring national trends. In fact, in 2017 only 11% of girls aged 5-13 in southeast Michigan get one hour of play per day.

Informed by these insights, we led the development of the script, provided art direction, and oversaw the videographer, video participants, and site logistics for “Let’s Get Girls in the Game,” a short video featuring a diverse group of southeast Michigan girls playing and sharing how they feel to be active. The language emerged from conversations with Detroit high school girls who play lacrosse and volleyball, reflecting on how sports have shaped their lives. The video reinforces Project Play’s commitment to fair and equitable access to play for all girls.

The Work Department also co-produced Find Your Next Move, a half day sports sampling event designed to bring girls together and introduce them to new forms of play in an inspiring, welcoming and fun-filled environment. Nearly 300 girls, ages 5-13 took part in eight different sports activities, including soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, yoga, cheerleading, and free play.
