An Archive of Resistance, Resilience, and Organizing

WITH VOICES FROM THE GRASSROOTS

Branding and website design for an oral history archive of Detroit organizers.

Voices from the Grassroots is an oral history project that documents and amplifies Detroit organizers working at the intersections of racial, environmental, and economic justice. As a program of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, the initiative preserves the histories of those shaping Detroit’s movements for self-determination, resistance, and liberation.

The Work Department provided branding and website design for Voices from the Grassroots, in partnership with Featherstone, who developed the website. We created a distinct brand for the initiative as part of the larger visual identity system for the Keith Center’s programs. The staggered typography in the logo reflects the layered nature of oral histories, and the serif font connects the project to traditional storytelling. The color palette, drawn from the Detroit Equity Action Lab logo — which we also designed — emphasizes urgency, solidarity, and the power of grassroots action.

We also designed the Voice from the Grassroots website, structuring its layout and overall user experience. Organized around key themes of water, land, and education, the site connects visitors with oral histories, historical timelines, and organizing resources. Throughout the process, we managed the website development, collaborating with Featherstone to ensure the final product aligned with the project’s mission and delivered an engaging, accessible experience.

Voices from the Grassroots is both a digital archive and a living resource that connects past struggles with the future of grassroots activism.
